Putnam County

Putnam County, is located in western West Virginia. Winfield, the county seat, has a population of 2,301 (2010). Ridge riding is the prominent biking feature of Putnam County.

Putnam County Rides

The two current routes listed are in the Northeastern part of the county and offer some great ridge riding. I refer to this section of the state as the plains of West Virginia, because all the ridges are about the same height.

A little about the county.

Putnam County was named for Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam The county seat is Winfield, named for General Winfield Scott of Mexican War fame. Putnam is one of the few counties that with population grown in West Virginia over the past few decades. Its population is 55,486 (2010) with a population density of 159 per square mile. Toyota Motor Company has an engine and transmission manufacturing plant in Buffalo. A lot of the residents commute to work in Cabell and Kanawha Counties. It has an area of 350 square miles.

The Kanawha River bisects the county. The Winfield Locks and Dam are located just downstream from Winfield.
